Some examples include blood flow interacting with soft tissues, flags waving in the wind, morphing wings in Micro-Air Vehicles (MAV). To accurately capture the interactions between the two fields involve very intricate coupling process and advanced numerical solution techniques. In this talk, we will first discuss the general frameworks used to model fluid-structure interactions, i.e. boundary-fitted mesh and non-boundary-fitted mesh techniques. Then, we present the Immersed Finite Element Method (IFEM) that we have been developing and enhancing over the past decade to study complex fluid-structure interactions. This non-boundary-fitted mesh technique does not require mesh-updating or remeshing, and can easily couple any existing fluid and solid solvers. We will go in depth of the advancement made for this method in order to yield accurate and stable solutions for low and high Reynolds number flows, large deformations, and high density disparities. In the end, some validation cases and applications are presented to show the robustness of the approach.
